چکیده

The ability to collect physical, chemical and biological observations across a wide range of altitudes is essential for an understanding of atmospheric processes across all length scales from global (Earth system modeling) through cyclonic (synoptic meteorology), all the way down to the mesoand micro-scale of localized phenomena. These are employed as boundary conditions or calibration targets in numerical models or as training data for statistical emulators of atmospheric variables. In either case, atmospheric science may require these observations at a range of altitudes from the planetary boundary layer all the way up to the upper layers of the stratosphere or even the mesosphere. Here are a few examples of applications where extensive atmospheric observations are of great importance, either on a routine basis or as part of targeted campaigns:

Development of an Aerodynamic Model and Control Law Design for a High Altitude Airship

Lighter-than air vehicles are an attractive solution for many applications requiring a sustained airborne presence. The buoyancy force provides an energy-free form of lift, offering a non-traditional approach to long-duration missions for which traditional aircraft are not well-suited. Potential applications include roving or hovering surveillance and communication utilities for both military a...

In-flight Icing Characteristics of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles during Special Atmospheric Condition over the Carpathian-basin

The in-flight aerial icing phenomena is very important for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) because it causes some serious problems such as reduced lift and increased drag forces, significantly decreased angle of attack, increased weight, structural imbalances and improper radio communications. In order to increase flight safety of UAV’s we develop an integrated meteorological support system ...

Evaluation of Geometric and Atmospheric Doppler for GNSS-RO Payloads

To reduce the sampling rate in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-radio occultation receivers, it is essential to establish a suitable estimation of Doppler frequency from the received signal in the satellite onboard receiver. This receiver is usually located on low earth orbit satellite and receives GNSS satellites signal in the occultation situation. The occurred Doppler on the signal ...

Atmospheric Sampling on Ascension Island Using Multirotor UAVs

As part of an NERC-funded project investigating the southern methane anomaly, a team drawn from the Universities of Bristol, Birmingham and Royal Holloway flew small unmanned multirotors from Ascension Island for the purposes of atmospheric sampling. The objective of these flights was to collect air samples from below, within and above a persistent atmospheric feature, the Trade Wind Inversion,...

The Challenges of Flight-Testing Unmanned Air Vehicles

Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) remain a developing technology of keen interest to the military as well as certain commercial enterprises (such as mining exploration companies), with over 200 UAV types in use throughout the world. UAVs present a difficult challenge for the T&E community as well, with present military UAV interest focussed on total autonomy to reduce operator skill requirements and...
